About Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park is a protected area in northwestern Rwanda, part of the Virunga Mountains chain. Established in 1925, it was Africa's first national park and is renowned for its population of endangered mountain gorillas.
The park covers 160 square kilometers and encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. It's most famous for the work of primatologist Dian Fossey and the mountain gorilla conservation efforts that continue today.
